Spiritual Exploration

The Spiritual Exploration (SE) Certificate is a non-credit, competency-based program of active learning and reflection, designed for all who identify as “spiritual but not religious”, interfaith, or spiritually curious/adventurous. The SE Certificate program supports lifelong learners to delve into a wide range of worldview conversations and spiritual practices, while assessing and documenting their development through a personalized study plan, learning portfolio, and intentional mentorship.

The Core Competencies: Each of the four core areas of competence guide the development and documentation of your knowledge, skills, and attributes in alignment with academic programming outcomes while remaining grounded in your own professional and personal context. Outcomes across all areas of competence are designed to support you to develop holistically, through knowing (knowledge), doing (skills), and being (attributes).

Air: Intellectual Clarity

Outcomes – Learners completing the programme of study will:

  • Know – Comprehend, apply and integrate key concepts and terminology with adequate reference to expert and/or scholarly opinion at a level of scholarly fluency in elected areas of focus. (Connection with scholarly traditions that inform the discussions you are having within your context and community; read, interpret, and communicate);
  • Be – Value critical inquiry and self-reflection by demonstrating intentional and systemic critique of their conclusions and assumptions;
  • Do – Contribute to intellectual discourse inclusively, demonstrating empathy for difference in experience and leaving space for other voices to be heard.

Fire: Passion for Justice

Outcomes – Learners completing the programme of study will:

  • Know – Name their own position and privilege in the context of one or more contextual framework(s), such as feminist methodologies and/or the TRC calls to action (Demonstrate decolonizing and postcolonial commitments and practices);
  • Be – Articulate pro-queer, feminist, and decolonising perspectives and methodologies;
  • Do – Describe solidarity-building ventures for liberative community developments in specified contexts.

Water: Deep Healing

Outcomes – Learners completing the programme of study will:

  • Know – Develop emotional intelligence and awareness of self through reflective practice and exploration of one or more assessments of personality;
  • Be – Adopt trauma-aware healing perspectives and practices;
  • Do – Demonstrate collaborative and empathetic leadership in chosen contexts.

Earth: Ecological Embodiment

Outcomes – Learners completing the programme of study will:

  • Know – Articulate how their local ecological, social, economic, and political context(s) impacts their behaviours;
  • Be – Identify their core eco-cultural values and how these are relevant in their specified contexts;
  • Do – Implement an integral and sustainable praxis within their chosen context(s).

Competencies Specific to Your Certificate – Spiritual Exploration

Cat: Universal Curiosity

Outcomes – Learners completing the programme of study will:

  • Know – Examine textual and oral sources of spiritual teaching from a stance of open and engaged curiosity;
  • Be – Demonstrate respectful awareness of multiple spiritual traditions;
  • Do – cultivate and document their practice of an expansive and intuitive perception of spirituality.

Braid: Creative Syncretism

Outcomes – Learners completing the programme of study will:

  • Know – Develop cross-tradition connections in novel and creative ways;
  • Be – Practice awareness of harms possible in (mis)appropriation of culture;
  • Do – Commit to personal and communal responsibility in the intentional blending of ideas and practices.

Crane Bag: Personal Practice

Outcomes – Learners completing the programme of study will:

  • Know – Evaluate the effectiveness of tools and components the learner applies in their regular spiritual practice;
  • Be – Demonstrate self awareness on the path to spiritual maturity through continual reflection on personal practice;
  • Do – Commit to the development of a personal spiritual practice undergirded by intellectual, emotional, and imaginative engagement with a plurality of traditions and perspectives.
