St. Andrew’s College is excited to announce the appointment of our new Pastor-in-Residence: the Reverend Cathy Coates!

Cathy is a Western Canadian having been born in Vancouver, raised in Kamloops, and living and working in Brandon, Winnipeg, Victoria, Prince George, Quill Lake, Lethbridge, and Saskatoon. She eventually found her way to St. Andrew’s College, and graduated with an M.Div. in 1999. While at St A’s, Cathy was hired as the first non-Roman Catholic Spiritual Care worker at St Paul’s Hospital and discovered a love of hospital chaplaincy. After ordination, Cathy was Settled in Quill Plains, then a 3 point rural pastoral charge, before being Called to McKillop United in Lethbridge as part of a multi-staff team. Returning to her first love in ministry, hospital chaplaincy, she finished her paid ministry career as the UCC Hospital Chaplain in Saskatoon.

Cathy retired in 2020 (right at the start of the pandemic). She volunteers with READ Saskatoon, is part of a Circle of Support and Accountability through Micah Mission, and is actively involved with the Saskatoon Abortion Support Network. She is a reader, a gardener, and loves to walk, bake, and sing. That along with being a grandma fills her heart and offers balance and laughter.

In Cathy’s own words:

“As a student at St Andrew’s College, I valued the integration of academic studies with ‘how to do’ ministry. I am excited to walk with students as they discover the ways and places the practical meets academic learning. The chance to be part of a contemplative practice is a gift. As Pastor in Residence, I am there to listen, share experiences, reflect, and sit quietly as needed. And to hold space for staff and faculty to share frustrations and celebrate successes. The rich community that is St A’s is inviting me to a new chapter in my ministry and I look forward to sharing my gifts and skills.”

Welcome Rev. Cathy!
